Area Code 934 History and Coverage

Area code 934 entered service on July 16, 2016, as an overlay for the existing 631 numbering plan area. The added code expanded the supply of available telephone numbers after forecasts showed that 631’s numbering resources were nearing exhaustion.

New York regulators chose an overlay for 934, allowing the two codes to serve the same established countywide territory. Under the North American Numbering Plan, an overlay adds a new area code to an existing numbering plan area while preserving its geographic boundaries. The 631/934 region includes Suffolk County’s western communities, central towns, the North Fork, the South Fork, and Shelter Island.
