Area Code 938 History and Coverage
Area code 938 was introduced into service on July 10, 2010, and it was approved by the Alabama Public Service Commission in order to provide more numbering resources for the 256 area. Area code 938 is also the first all services overlay of Alabama since it retains the same established territory, but with an addition of another area code in order to provide new telephone numbering resources. It is due to the near depletion of numbers that are available with 256 due to increased demands for the number.
The underlying 256 area code had been created on March 23, 1998, through a geographic split of Alabama’s original 205 area code. By the late 2000s, the available number inventory in the newer service area required relief. The Commission approved 938 in 2009 and scheduled its activation for the following summer. Existing 256 subscribers kept their assigned numbers, while service providers could use either 256 or 938 for new assignments as resources became available.
The overlay expanded the region’s numbering capacity within one shared service territory. Its development followed the earlier 1998 division that established area code 256 from the former 205 area.
