Area Code 948 History and Coverage
Area code 948 was activated on May 9, 2022, following the Virginia State Corporation Commission’s issuance of an all-service distributed overlay of the 757 numbering plan area on February 5, 2020.
The addition expanded the region’s available number inventory while keeping the existing 757 geographic boundary intact. Customers with 757 numbers retained those numbers, and 948 became available for new telephone service throughout the shared territory. State relief materials identify subscriber growth and the expansion of services requiring phone numbers as factors that deplete an area code’s inventory.
The earlier 757 code opened in July 1996, establishing a separate code for southeastern Virginia within the North American Numbering Plan. The shared 757/948 territory connects the core Hampton Roads communities with Williamsburg, Franklin, Suffolk, and Virginia’s Eastern Shore.
