Area Code 202 History and Coverage
The initial assignment of this area code took place in 1947 in the course of the establishment of the North American Numbering Plan. 202 was allocated for the District of Columbia. Its service territory was relatively small compared to other early codes due to the special status of the District being an enclave within Maryland and Virginia. Until recent times, 202 served as the only code in the District despite the increasing use of telephone services for government offices, embassies, universities, hospitals, and mobile phones.
Thus, the history of this area code can also be linked with the development of the wider Washington metropolitan area but with a strict boundary of the District itself not spreading into the surrounding suburbs. Other Maryland and Virginia areas outside of the federal district were using different numbering schemes such as 301 and 703 codes respectively, whereas 202 served as a single code designating phone numbers within the federal district.
Eventually, the need to allocate additional phone numbers resulted in the introduction of another numbering plan decision. In 2021, area code 771 has been designated as an overlay of the original 202 code covering the same territory of the District of Columbia.
