Area Code 771 History and Coverage
Area code 771 was introduced on November 9, 2021 as an overlay area code to the D.C.'s 202 numbering plan area. In September 2020, the D.C. Public Service Commission approved the area code relief plan. It was initiated due to the projection of the North American Numbering Plan Administrator about the exhaustion of the available 202 area code phone numbers. In order not to create new geographic area codes, it was decided to launch 771 throughout the 202 geographic area.
The reason behind such decision lies in the unique position of the District of Columbia in the numbering plan. The original 202 area code appeared in 1947 and it belongs to a single compact federal district, rather than the multiple-county area. The boundary of the 202 code is mostly limited by Maryland, while the boundary across Virginia is limited by the Potomac river. As for the overlay area code 771, it covers the same jurisdiction and does not have separate areas for wards, neighborhoods, and business districts.
The planning of the area code was made in the framework of the number-resource relief program. It results in the combination of the 202 and 771 codes, which is just one overlay complex in the North American Numbering Plan. Suburban areas around D.C. are assigned to other numbering plans, such as 301 and 240 for Maryland, and 703 and 571 for Northern Virginia.
