Area Code 208 History and Coverage

Area code 208 came into existence in 1947 and was part of the numbering plan implemented under North American Numbering Plan. For decades, a single area code served the whole of Idaho despite its long distance from the north to the south, mountainous land features, and remote towns and cities. This numbering plan also included Snake River Plain area, mining and forestry areas in the northern part of Idaho, and regions around the capital city.

However, based on the number prediction studies conducted, it became apparent that more numbers would be required to meet the needs of 208 numbers in Idaho both now and in the future. Hence, the regulator of Idaho opted to adopt 986 as an overlay code rather than the splitting of the geographical zones in the numbering scheme. The new code was approved by the North American Numbering Plan Administrator in 2015 and went into operation on September 5, 2017.

With such solution, the existing 208 territory remained unchanged and another set of numbers was added. Thus, both codes cover the Panhandle area, Clearwater/Salmon River territory, Treasure Valley, farming area in the south-central part of the state, and highlands in the east adjacent to Wyoming border.
