Area Code 986 History and Coverage
Area code 986 entered service on September 5, 2017, after Idaho’s supply of available 208 telephone numbers approached exhaustion. The Idaho Public Utilities Commission began planning for additional numbering capacity in 2015, when the state still used 208 as its only area code. Idaho had delayed the need for a second code through number-conservation measures introduced in 2001, but growing use of mobile phones, internet-based services, and Voice over Internet Protocol increased demand for new numbers.
State regulators approved 986 as a statewide overlay for the existing 208 territory. This approach allowed providers to assign 986 to new telephone numbers while keeping established 208 numbers in place. The plan applied across Idaho’s full service area, from the Panhandle to the Snake River Plain, without creating separate geographic numbering regions.
The North American Numbering Plan Administrator assigned 986 in 2015 and listed its implementation under Planning Letter 490. By its September 2017 activation, Idaho’s numbering resources operated as the 208/986 overlay complex.
