Area Code 210 History and Coverage

Area code 210 was launched in 1992 through geographic partitioning of 512, the original area code of Texas within the North American Numbering Plan. At first, the area code 210 had the boundaries that extended over a large territory in south and west Texas including Hill Country and Rio Grande Valley. It followed the boundaries of the original area code 512 which occupied rather a large part of central and southern Texas until the necessity for further partitioning appeared.

Further geographic partitioning of 210 occurred in 1997 when the new area codes 830 and 956 were created by dividing the current area code. As a result, the Hill Country along with other areas joined 830, while the southern boundary and Rio Grande Valley became part of 956. Thus, the regional scope of the area code 210 was reduced to the area surrounding the Bexar County.

Currently, the area code includes long established communities of the areas around the urban core of the city, including Alamo Heights, Leon Valley, Helotes, and northeast suburbs. The nearby area code 830 covers the surrounding ring that includes Hill Country and other rural counties.
