Area Code 512 History and Coverage

Area code 512 was introduced in 1947 as one of the original North American Numbering Plan Areas belonging to Texas. The initial area covered by this area code was much bigger than the capital region of south-central Texas which is covered by this number territory nowadays. The first geographical split happened in 1992, when area code 210 was launched to cover San Antonio and other territories of South Texas. Another geographical split took place in 1999, when area code 361 was introduced to cover Coastal Bend and adjacent territories.

The area was reduced to faster growing capital region of Central Texas due to the geographical splits. As the area became more developed and residential and business telephone needs increased, there was less number capacity in this area. In 2013, an overlay area code 737 was created without geographical split, covering the same territory as 512 does.

The evolution of this area code, from a broad original area to two geographical splits, and then to an overlay, reflects the changes in the telecommunication demands in this part of Texas. Presently, this area reaches the east border of the Hill Country and extends up to the area of Bastrop County, but Coastal Bend belongs to 361.
