Area Code 212 History and Coverage
Introduced in 1947, 212 is one of the original area codes in New York, based on the North American Numbering Plan. In its original format, 212 covered all five boroughs of New York City, in line with the city’s economic and commercial power as a hub of government, finance, media, and transport. With the spread of phone networks through the outer boroughs, there were insufficient numbers left for the territory to stay the same.
Geographical splitting in 1984 led to 718 covering Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island, with 212 covering Manhattan and The Bronx. The latter then shifted to 718 coverage in 1992, bringing 212 back down to cover Manhattan only. This has confined 212’s coverage to a thin strip running between the Hudson and East Rivers on the Manhattan Island.
With the growing number of companies, residents, institutions, and mobile phones within the borough, there was an ever-growing demand for telephone numbers. 917 was created as an overlay code in 1992, and 646 was introduced as another overlay code in Manhattan in the late 1990s, followed by 332 in 2017.
