Area Code 718 History and Coverage
In 1984, area code 718 was introduced into use in New York City through a geographic split of the territory originally covered by 212 numbering plan area. Initially, 718 was designated to serve Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island territories, while Manhattan and the Bronx territories stayed with 212. This was due to necessity of expanding the number of telephone numbers in the city where just one area code functioned for many years.
The arrangement changed again in 1992, when the Bronx and the Marble Hill section of Manhattan were moved into the 718 territory. Marble Hill is geographically attached to the Bronx even though it is legally part of Manhattan, making it a notable exception within the city’s telephone geography. Most of Manhattan continued under 212.
In 1999, 347 overlay was introduced for the 718 service territory because of growing need for telephone numbers. In addition, area code 929 joined the same territory in 2011. The greater numbering complex also comprises 917 serving all five boroughs. In June 2026, 465 area code started serving as an overlay for the 347, 718, 917, and 929 region.
