Area Code 220 History and Coverage
The overlay area code 220 was implemented in 2015 to serve Ohio. The overlay was introduced without splitting the existing territory of 740 area code, meaning that the overlay added capacity but did not change the boundaries of the existing area code. In other words, two area codes may cover the same territory within the North American Numbering Plan if implemented via the overlay strategy.
The previous 740 area code was created in 1998 as the result of splitting of area code 614. 740 became an area that had a large arc-shaped boundary around the outer parts of central and southeast regions of Ohio that were outside of Columbus-based area code 614. The region of 740/220 area code includes territory of the Muskingum River and Zanesville, Hocking Hills, and locations close to Ohio River including Marietta and Portsmouth. This area extends further to the north and includes cities of Delaware and Marion.
The combination of fast-growing central Ohio and Appalachian region, river towns, and transportation links provides the 220 and 740 area codes with larger geographical coverage compared to one metropolitan service area. Area code 220 did not create new geographical territory; it simply increased capacity in the existing 740 region.
