Area Code 740 History and Coverage

Area code 740 was introduced on November 8, 1997 as the result of a geographic split of the existing long-used 614 area code of Ohio. While leaving Columbus and much of the inner region with 614 area code, it assigned a large outer area to the new 740 area code. Back then, 614 was one of Ohio’s original area codes introduced with the early North American numbering plan.

The new code brought together places with different regional ties, from the Muskingum Valley and eastern Ohio’s industrial towns to the Appalachian Plateau and the counties south of the Columbus metropolitan area. Its territory includes the corridor around Zanesville and Cambridge, reaches toward Athens and Marietta, and extends westward into parts of the state’s central interior. This was a significant redrawing of the former 614 region rather than a new statewide numbering arrangement.

Later, due to number shortage, there was a further change. On April 22, 2015, area code 220 became an overlay of 740 region, as Ohio regulators approved the new code in 2013. This change did not modify the geographic boundaries of 740 area code. Pairs of area codes 740 and 220 still cover the areas of U.S. Route 33, the I-70 to the east of Columbus, and the Ohio River counties of southeastern Ohio.
