Area Code 225 History and Coverage
The introduction of area code 225 dates back to 1998. At this time, a geographic split was undertaken of area code 504 that previously served a bigger section of southeastern Louisiana. The introduction of the area code resulted from the existence of state government, Louisiana State University, health care services, river industry, and suburban development in the region that necessitated the establishment of a denser communications market. While the existing number pool served the New Orleans region, the new code covered the capital region.
The area code does not cover the parishes that stretch around New Orleans but instead focuses on an interior and Mississippi River area of the state. West Baton Rouge and Iberville parishes are found along the Mississippi River region whereas East and West Feliciana are found towards the northeast to the Mississippi border. Pointe Coupee Parish is situated towards the northwestern part of the capital region with its main city of New Roads lying next to False River. The region is made up of areas of the Livingston Parish that lie on the eastern side of the Mississippi River in the Amite River basin.
