Area Code 504 History and Coverage
Area code 504 was assigned in 1947 as one of the original North American Numbering Plan codes, initially serving all of Louisiana. Its early statewide reach reflected the plan’s first arrangement, when a single code could accommodate the state’s telephone numbering needs. The footprint changed in 1957, when area code 318 was created through a geographic split for northern and western Louisiana. In 1998, the Baton Rouge region received 225 in another split, further concentrating 504 in the southeast.
A 2001 geographic split produced 985 for much of southeastern Louisiana beyond the compact territory retained by 504. That boundary left 504 associated with the urbanized lower Mississippi River area and nearby parishes, while 985 extended along portions of the North Shore and bayou country. In 2022, 457 was introduced as an overlay on the 504 territory, adding numbering capacity without changing the existing geographic boundary.
These changes divided Louisiana’s original statewide telephone territory into regional numbering areas over time. The present 504 footprint is centered near the lower Mississippi River delta, with its southern edge reaching Plaquemines Parish.
