Area code 228 became functional in 1997 with a split of the state’s previous 601 numbering plan, created in 1947. This split allocated the southern coast and southeastern portion of the 601 numbering plan to a new numbering plan. This was a geographic split and not an overlay since 601 numbering plan was kept in the rest of the territory, whereas 228 received a southern segment.
