Area Code 601 History and Coverage
Area code 601 was introduced in 1947 as the initial North American Numbering Plan area code of Mississippi, covering the whole territory of the state since then. Per the initial numbering plan convention, the second digit in its name, 0, indicates that it is supposed to cover the entire state, not only parts of it.
The statewide system was changed in 1997, as 228 was split off from the area to cover the counties of Hancock, Harrison, and Jackson, located on the Gulf Coast. Another split came in 1999 and created 662 as the area code for northern Mississippi. This way the basic area code borders were established, separating coast and northern part of the state from the rest of it previously covered by the code.
On March 14, 2005, area code 769 was put into use as an overlay for 601 after being assigned by NANPA in 2004. The overlay did not leave the territory covered by 601 area code untouched and included 769 into the same geographic territory. The shared 601/769 territory border goes between 662 area in the north and 228 coast areas while going further inland into Mississippi till the state borders of Alabama and Louisiana.
