Area Code 229 History and Coverage

The 229 area code was introduced in 2000 due to a geographic split of Georgia’s area code 912; thus, it became a separate code for the southwestern and south-central portion of the previous 912 territory. This measure allowed for providing extra capacity of phone numbers in a vast and widely distributed area. There was a need in extra numbering resources in many population centers as individual consumers, public institutions, health-care facilities, educational establishments, retailers, and agricultural companies needed telecommunication services.

This code was assigned to most of the Coastal Plain area of Georgia, which was influenced by agriculture, economy of county seats, and highway links between interior communities. It includes the counties close to the borders of Alabama and continues to the east up to the Interstate 75 corridor. The local hospitals, government facilities, and business centers of regional hub cities provide services not only for their population but also for the residents of the neighboring counties.

For now, the 229 code has been used in this part of Georgia since its introduction. In 2022, area code 686 has been implemented as the overlay within the same geographic area instead of a new code replacement or reallocation of communities to another code. The territory of 229 touches Florida in the Thomas County and reaches Americus and Cordele to the north.
