Area Code 912 History and Coverage

Area code 912 entered service in 1954 as Georgia’s first split from 404, which had covered the entire state since the original 1947 North American Numbering Plan. The new code initially served central and southern Georgia, placing Savannah, Macon, and Albany within the same numbering area.

It was calculated in 1999 that 912 area code would exhaust all the numbering space by 2001. In this regard, the Georgia Public Service Commission gave approval for implementing a three-way split to provide number relief throughout South Georgia. New area codes 229 and 478 were put into use in August 2000, and completed the conversion process in August 2001. The southwestern part of Georgia including Albany became part of 229 code, the central part of Georgia, particularly Macon, shifted to 478 code, while the southeastern part remained in 912.

Today, 912 area code serves the coastal and Atlantic plain area of Georgia, beginning from Savannah area until the border with Florida, including Brunswick, St. Marys, Kingsland, etc. The inland part consists of the communities lying on routes between Savannah and Statesboro, Hinesville, Waycross, Douglas, and Vidalia. 229 area code covers southwest Georgia, while 478 covers central Georgia.

For 2025, the Georgia Public Service Commission declared its intention of using area code 565 in the 912 region due to approaching exhaustion of 912 numbering options. The new area code will be based on the same geographic borders; there is no implementation date yet.
