Area Code 231 History and Coverage

231 area code was introduced in 1999 as a result of splitting of the Michigan’s 616 area code. As the consequence of this action the northern part of the previous 616 area code became the territory of 231 area code, while 616 area code remained for Grand Rapids area and surrounding areas of western Michigan. The introduction of this code became necessary due to the need for additional numbers as the result of growth of local residential and business communities and tourism connected with this area.

This region’s development has been influenced by the development of lake commerce, fruit growing regions, lumber production, and tourism connected with beach resorts, inland lakes, and resort towns. Lake ports and highways connecting shoreline region with inland communities, and tourist destinations in the northern part of the region resulted in the establishment of the boundary for area code covering both traditional industrial towns and tourist destinations of the region.

This area code covers the coast of Lake Michigan, Grand Traverse Bay area, and towns of the northern Lower Peninsula near the Mackinac Bridge.
