Area Code 616 History and Coverage
Area code 616 entered service in 1947 as one of Michigan’s three original North American Numbering Plan codes, alongside 313 and 517. Its initial territory was unusually broad, covering Michigan’s western half and the Upper Peninsula. The code’s later history reflects the division of that large territory into smaller geographic numbering areas.
In 1961, a geographic split created area code 906 for the Upper Peninsula. That change separated the state’s northern peninsula from the western Lower Peninsula, leaving 616 with a lengthy north-to-south section of western Michigan. The remaining territory kept that form for several decades.
In 1999, there was another split: the territory of northwest Michigan, including the area around Lake Michigan and some inland area near Traverse City and Cadillac, was split off 616 to create area code 231. The final split in 2002 divided the southern portion of 616 into a new 269 area, incorporating Kalamazoo and Battle Creek.
