Area Code 240 History and Coverage

Area code 240 was designated as an overlay of Maryland’s existing 301 service area in 1997. Maryland acquired 301 in 1947, at which time 301 represented the entire state within the original North American Numbering Plan layout. In 1991, there was a large geographical reconfiguration in which 410 was separated from 301 to serve the Baltimore area and the Eastern Shore, while the 301 service area remained intact and 240 was assigned as an overlay of it to increase the number of available numbers without establishing an additional internal geographic distinction.

This made 240 part of Maryland’s historic 301 area in the numbering plan rather than 410/443 area. The shared 301/240 service area includes multiple regions within Maryland. This consists of developed counties located along the border with the District of Columbia, as well as northwest through the Piedmont part of Maryland and into the Appalachian area close to the border with West Virginia. The southern part includes tidewater areas around the Potomac and Patuxent rivers. The varied geography represents the service area retained by 301 following its split in 1991, running from the outskirts of the nation’s capital to Maryland’s far west panhandle.
