Area Code 301 History and Coverage
Area code 301 was assigned to Maryland in 1947 when it included the whole state being one of the original numbering plans of the North American Numbering Plan. Being one statewide area code fitted the numbering plan at the period of time before Maryland became divided into several code areas. In 1991, a geographic division established area code 410 for Baltimore, Annapolis, and Eastern Shore. The rest of the 301 area remained outside of the 410 area.
It is especially significant because its western extension stretches beyond the Piedmont into Washington County and down the Potomac valley into Allegany and Garrett counties, where Maryland is at its narrowest between Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Interstates 68 and 81 run through this part of the 301 territory, Interstate 68 from Cumberland east toward the Pennsylvania state line and I-81 through Hagerstown.
The later growth in the number of telephone numbers has resulted in the addition of another area code to this territory in 1997 - area code 240. A third area code, 227, was added in 2023. Thus, three area codes serve this territory today. However, even with these additions, the western boundary of this territory is still tied to the narrow Maryland Appalachian stretch including Garrett County by the West Virginia border.
