Area Code 251 History and Coverage

This area code appeared in 2001 via a geographic split of 334 that had been covering a much bigger part of southern Alabama until then. It followed the continued need for additional phone numbers since 334 itself was introduced in 1995 via a geographic split of 205 that had already existed since 1947. While 334 remained to serve the southeastern and south-central parts of the state, 251 received the southwestern area of it.

The development of its territory was linked to the history of the region that was influenced by Gulf commerce, military operations, lumbering, manufacturing, and coastal residence development. The geographic spread goes far inland to reach areas of the lower basin of Alabama River and approach the border with Mississippi. These areas include historical county seats, agricultural regions, lumber-producing areas, and transportation corridors from the coast toward the interior regions.

The introduction of 251 occurred at a time when the old system of numbering in Alabama needed to be divided because of the reduced availability of numbers. Being different from an overlay, the geographic split divided the former 334 area into two separate service territories: one containing the Gulf-facing southwest and another the Wiregrass and other southeastern regions. The 251 areas go even further north to reach Clarke and Monroe counties.
