Area Code 334 History and Coverage

In 1995, 334 was assigned through a geographic split from Alabama’s original 205 numbering area. For decades, 205 had covered the entire state, but growing demand for telephone numbers led to separate codes for different parts of Alabama. The new code initially covered a broad southern and eastern section of the state, reflecting the region’s expanding population centers and increasing business, government, education, and military communications needs.

A further geographic change came in 2001, when area code 251 split from 334 to serve Alabama’s southwestern counties, including the Gulf Coast and Mobile area. That division left 334 associated primarily with the state’s capital-region corridor, the Black Belt, and communities extending toward the Alabama-Georgia border.

The territory includes areas shaped by older river routes and farm counties as well as places connected by major highways such as Interstate 85 and U.S. Route 231. Its eastern edge follows much of Alabama’s border with Georgia, while its southern reach includes the Wiregrass landscape around the state’s southeastern corner.
