Area Code 252 History and Coverage

The 252 area code was launched in 1998 as a result of the geographic split of 919, which created a smaller numbering territory for North Carolina. Prior to this reorganization, the 919 area code covered a significantly greater geographic zone of North Carolina. The eastern zone of the former 919 territory was designated to 252, whereas the 919 area code continued to cover the central zone. This was a geographic split, not an overlay, which means that the two area codes occupied different zones.

252 does not constitute a continuous urban area, but goes as far as the border of Virginia to the north, and constitutes the Albemarle-Pamlico region, where there are vast distances between many populated settlements owing to the rivers, sounds, and marshlands in this territory.
