Area Code 919 History and Coverage

919 area code was introduced in 1954 in order to separate North Carolina's statewide area code 704 and create a separate numbering plan area for the central and eastern parts of the state. Thus, 919 area code covered the eastern two thirds of the state, starting from the Winston-Salem area in the west through Raleigh and all of Coastal Plain.

However, the need for additional telephone numbers resulted in splitting area code 919 in 1993. New area code 910 appeared in the western and southern territory of 919, covering Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Fayetteville and Wilmington. This splitting moved the focus of area code 919 towards Raleigh, Triangle and adjacent communities of the central and eastern North Carolina.

The second split took place in 1998 when area code 252 was taken from the territory of 919 and included the northeastern and eastern portions of 919 area. This way such cities as Rocky Mount, Greenville, and New Bern were reassigned to area code 252, while 919 kept its traditional center – the territory of Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill and surrounding communities including Cary, Sanford, Oxford, Goldsboro, and Mebane.

Finally, in 2012 area code 984 was assigned to the entire territory of 919 area code as an overlay.
