Area Code 254 History and Coverage

Area code 254 was introduced in the year 1997 following a geographic split of area code 817 which was serving a much larger geographical area in north and central Texas. Following this geographic split, most of the geographical area was divided into area code 254 while area code 817 was continued to be served on the Fort Worth side of the region. It was a geographic split and not an overlay as the two different codes were assigned to two different areas.

At this particular time, there was already increasing geographic split in Texas numbering plan due to the increasing demand for telephone numbers outside the boundaries set during the middle of the twentieth century. In this case, the geographic split was caused by the practical difference between the Fort Worth metro area and the interior counties of south and southwest of Fort Worth.

The 254 region covers well-established travel and settlement routes through county seats, agricultural communities, college towns, and military bases. Geography includes parts of the Brazos River drainage system and limestone hills west of Interstate 35. Portions lie near the Cross Timbers where the central Texas geography meets the rolling terrain of North Texas. The geographic area goes towards Stephenville, Gatesville, and Lampasas but not towards the Fort Worth urban area.
