Area Code 817 History and Coverage
Area code 817 was created in 1953 through a geographic split of 214, one of Texas’s original numbering-plan codes. Its initial territory was much larger than its present footprint, covering broad parts of north-central and west-central Texas. At that stage, one code connected widely separated communities across Central Texas, North Texas, and the western portion of the state. Population and commercial development during the latter half of the twentieth century increased the need for additional telephone numbers.
In 1997, geographic splits were made resulting in the assignment of area codes 254 in Waco, Temple and Killeen region and 940 in the northern region including Wichita Falls and areas close to Denton. Those divisions reduced 817 to a smaller North Texas service region.
Another number split occurred in 2000, when 682 was created as an overlay to area code 817. There have been no geographic changes due to this numbering split, but the previous territories of 817 can be seen in the current territory of 254 in Central Texas and 940 in Wichita Falls.
