Area Code 260 History and Coverage

Area code 260 was introduced in 2002 through a geographic split of 219, which had covered northern Indiana since 1948. The new arrangement retained 219 for the Lake Michigan-facing northwest, while 260 was assigned to the inland eastern part of the state’s northern tier. This was a split, not an overlay: the two codes were assigned to separate geographic territories.

This split was caused by the continuous need for additional phone numbers as the number of cellphones, additional residential and business telephone lines and other telecommunication services grew rapidly. Thus, Indiana received its own numbering plan for the area east of the division line between Area Codes 219 and 260. This territory is characterized by a certain regional landscape of manufacturing industries, agriculture and county-level service centers with Interstate 69 serving as the main north-south transportation route. On the eastern side, the territory borders on the territory of Ohio, and on the north side – on communities adjacent to the state of Michigan. This long-standing regional link of the inland counties of Indiana with the neighboring states through the road transport, employment opportunities and economic activities made it necessary to divide the interior eastern counties under Area Code 260.
