Area Code 219 History and Coverage

The current area code 219 has been introduced in 1948, when the original 317 numbering plan area in Indiana has been split, giving a new area code to the northern part of the state. Initially, however, its range covered much more than the present boundaries, incorporating such areas as the South Bend–Elkhart area, and Fort Wayne. Hence, for many years one numbering area covered the whole territory from northern Indiana's Lake Michigan industrial belt through manufacturing towns, college towns, and agricultural counties. Such a configuration was created due to development of the Calumet area, being heavily engaged in heavy industries and transportation connections, as well as connections of other northern cities by means of railroad tracks and highways. In 2001, it was decided to perform a triple geographical split of the area due to the exhaustion of available numbers by the Indiana regulatory bodies. In 2002, 219 code remained covering the northwest area, 574 became the code for north-central Indiana, while 260 – for the northeast Indiana area. According to the decisions of the commission, La Porte, Rolling Prairie, Westville, Union Mills, and Hanna were included into 219, while Ligonier and Cromwell became parts of 260.
