Area code 262 was introduced in 1999 as part of a geographic split from Wisconsin's old area code 414 numbering plan territory. Area code 262 was created when a split was done between the compact area around Milwaukee which 414 kept and the rest of the territory which was assigned 262. It was a split and not an overlay since the two codes were put in different geographic territories.

This kind of change came about as part of the stress that can be experienced by codes serving a growing metropolitan area. Geographic splits were very common during this period since they were the usual methods used to ensure there were sufficient number resources available before overlays became common. The area code 262 region is based on the pattern of development in the area and covers areas associated with the Milwaukee metro area as well as coastal areas and interior areas up to the Kettle Moraine.

It has a territory that includes Kenosha, Lake Geneva, and West Bend, extending from the Illinois state line up north into the suburbs. Its territory continues to use Central Time. The 414 code was left in the Milwaukee territory after the split in 1999.
