Area Code 414 History and Coverage

The 414 area code was introduced in 1947 in the introduction of the first North American Numbering Plan and allotted two numbers for Wisconsin: 414 for southern and eastern parts of Wisconsin while 715 covered northern parts of Wisconsin. Originally, the areas served by 414 were more extensive than what is served by this area code presently as it included large portions of southern and eastern Wisconsin. This area was initially subdivided in 1955 when area code 608 was formed in the western part of 414, including Madison.

More splits occurred as a result of divisions of the area served by area code 414. In 1997, a geographical split of the area served by 414 created area code 920 in the north and east regions of 414. Places such as Green Bay and Fox River Valley became part of 920. Another geographical split of 414 was created in 1999 with the creation of area code 262 from the southeastern region of 414 outside Milwaukee County.

These splits have all been geographical splits, not overlay splits, whereby 414 has surrendered territory to a new code serving a designated area. As of the 1999 split, the 414 area is currently limited to Milwaukee County.
