Area Code 269 History and Coverage
The code 269 was introduced in 2002 as a result of a split of 616, which originally encompassed a much bigger territory of the lower peninsula of Michigan. Due to an increased demand for telephone numbers, splitting of the territory of the old code into separate area codes proved to be necessary. However, instead of an overlay of another code on the territory of 616, the officials chose to split the territory of 616 and introduce 269.
As a matter of fact, the initial code 616 existed since the introduction of the North American Numbering Plan in 1947. In 1999, one part of the territory of 616 was divided and named 231. Now, in 2002, this process has continued further, and a code 269 was established for the remaining territories of 616.
According to the map, the territory of 269 extends from the shores of Lake Michigan at the vicinity of Benton Harbor and St. Joseph and goes further inland, covering Berrien, Cass, Van Buren and St. Joseph counties. The area code also encompasses such towns as Niles and Three Rivers, lying within the state of Michigan's Eastern Time Zone. Grand Rapids, however, remained under 616 code.
