Area Code 270 History and Coverage

The creation of 270 occurred in 1999 when the region had adopted geographical split of Kentucky's 502 numbering plan in that year to separate the west end of the previous 502 plan. The process created extra number capacity for telephone numbers because of demand increase for telephone numbers within the state of Kentucky. After the split, the area code 270 became the only code used within its jurisdiction up to 2014.

However, in 2014, there was another area code, which became an overlay for 270 region without creating another geographical split to form area code 364. The two area codes cover the same service territory but the area code 270 is the old one formed in 1999 through geographical split.

The service territory comprises Purchase area adjacent to the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, Pennyrile and even Barren River areas. There are connections between river valleys, agricultural counties and highways that connect all these towns within this particular region. However, the numbering area does not follow a particular physical landscape. On the north, it comprises the Ohio River communities while on the south the numbering area ends at Tennessee state lines. Paducah city is located at the far western part of the region.
