Area Code 502 History and Coverage

502 area code was launched in October 1947 as one of the first North American Numbering Plan area codes and at that time covered all of the state of Kentucky. In 1954, the geographic split took place and as a result, area code 606 appeared that was assigned to eastern half of the state of Kentucky. In 1999, another geographic split occurred; at that time, area code 270 was allocated to western part of Kentucky while 502 was left in north-central Kentucky.

The current area corresponds to the transportation and settlement pattern within Kentucky along the Ohio River, I-64 corridor and to the approaches to the state capital. It extends north to the area bordering Indiana state, where area codes 812 and 930 are allocated. To the east, 502 region touches on 859, to the south and to the west there is 270/364 region. Sometimes area code boundary does not coincide exactly with the counties’ borders, and some community located close to the border may be different from the whole county pattern.

In 2025, Kentucky Public Service Commission ordered the overlay for the region of area code 502 to increase numbering resources without creating another geographic split in the area. The new area code had not been determined in that order, the earliest date for its launch being no later than July 5, 2027.
