Area Code 272 History and Coverage

Area Code 272 was implemented as an overlay of the already established 570 numbering plan in 2013. In its turn, Area Code 570 was introduced in 1998 in the course of the geographic split from 717, when northeastern and north-central parts of Pennsylvania were separated from other regions of the state in order to create a separate numbering territory. The implementation of 272 numbering plan did not change anything in the geographic extent of the numbering territory but provided additional numbers for the already existing 570 code without creating new geography. Thus, both codes have exactly the same geography.

This area has a very old history that predates both of the numbering plans. Anthracite mining stimulated development of the Lackawanna and Wyoming valleys, while railroads made it possible to connect industrial cities to the rest of the territory of Pennsylvania and the neighboring states. Apart from the valley cities, this area comprises Endless Mountains area and Susquehanna Valley area, where the seats of counties traditionally provided services to agriculture community in their vicinity. This geographical diversity explains the fact that 570 numbering territory has such a large coverage area and not just a concentrated urban area.

In the terms of numbering plan, this overlay gave more telephone numbers to the already existing territory of the 1998 split. This area belongs to Eastern Time zone and located in the northern part of Pennsylvania. Northern upland of this area includes Tioga County plateau.
