Area Code 570 History and Coverage

Area code 570 was introduced in 1998 through a geographic split of Pennsylvania's 717 numbering plan. The change assigned a separate code to the northeastern and north-central portion of the former 717 territory as demand for telephone numbers grew. At the time, a split was the numbering-plan method used to divide an existing service area rather than place a second code over it.

The geographic area that falls within the coverage area of the 570 area code is defined by the presence of the Appalachian Plateau, the Northern Tier close to the state of New York and the Pocono Mountains in close proximity to the state of New Jersey. The region contains communities within the watershed area of the Susquehanna River and counties where communities are spread out within a rural geography divided by ridges and highway corridors. Interstate 81 and Interstate 80 cross parts of the region connecting interior communities with other parts of Pennsylvania and neighboring states.

In 2013, there was an addition of the overlay code 272 to the same territory. The later numbering plan did not alter the geographic boundary of the area code 570 that was created in 1998. Both codes represent this portion of the Pennsylvania territory that encompasses northern river valleys and uplands near the eastern boundary of Pennsylvania.
