Area Code 276 History and Coverage
Area code 276 was introduced in 2001 via a geographic split from area code 540 in which part of the old territory became 276 because more telephone numbers were needed. It was a geographic split, not an overlay; that is, the two codes occupy different geographic locations.
The new territory of 540 still included such places as Roanoke and the Shenandoah Valley, while the 276 territory was given to the part of the old territory located nearer the borders of Virginia with Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, and West Virginia. This is an area where the road system and settlement are characterized by Ridge-and-Valley topography and Appalachian Plateau topography. Interstate 81 runs north to south along the Tennessee border, while U.S. Route 58 crosses the southern counties of Virginia.
This happened as part of a trend at that time involving breaking up older, larger areas of territory into smaller pieces in order to increase telephone number capacity. The entire 276 territory observes Eastern Time. The western boundary of this area code runs along the Appalachian border regions of Virginia, which includes access to Cumberland Gap.
