Area Code 540 History and Coverage
Area code 540 was established in 1995 as a geographic split from the Virginia 703 area code numbering region. The new area code was carved out from the bulk of the former 703 region, excluding the Washington metropolitan core area, into a region with the combination of different parts of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Its boundaries reflected the diversity of Virginia's terrain as opposed to its metropolitan area.
In 2001, there was another geographical split, this time resulting in area code 276 covering the southwestern region of Virginia, and 540 was left to cover mostly western, northwestern, and north-central portions of Virginia. This meant that the areas near the Virginia-Tennessee border and the coalfield counties were outside the coverage of 540. There was yet another change in the future due to number demand, although this did not involve another geographical split.
Number demand later led to another change. In 2022, area code 826 was introduced as an overlay to the same region of 540. The 540 code remained intact while 826 numbers became available in the same numbering region. Currently, the 540 area code serves the regions influenced by the Shenandoah Valley, Blue Ridge, and upper Rappahannock corridor regions.
