Area Code 279 History and Coverage

Area code 279 became operational in 2018 after the overlay code was implemented to serve the pre-existing 916 area. Before the creation of 279, there have been many changes in the telephone geography of northern California throughout the years. Area code 916 is one of such area codes existing in California from 1947 and covering the much larger part of the territory of the state than current 916 area code. In 1997, the geographic territory of the 916 area code was decreased after the new area code 530 was created due to geographical split of area code 916, excluding the capital-area core.

At the time of introduction of the 279 code, the geographic territory of the 916 area code has already been decreased to cover the territory of the lower Sacramento Valley and adjacent foothill communities, which is the territory characterized by state government activity, suburban development, and extension of valley transportation corridor. Introduction of the 279 code involved the implementation of overlay code for the geographic territory of the same geographic area but not the definition of the additional territory boundaries within neighboring communities.

The territory covered by 279 and 916 codes includes parts of Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado, Yolo, Sutter, and Yuba counties.
