Area Code 916 History and Coverage
Area code 916 was assigned in 1947 as one of California’s three original North American Numbering Plan codes, initially serving the state’s far north. A statewide boundary realignment in 1950 redrew 916 for northeastern California and brought Sacramento into the code, establishing the broad orientation from which its later service area developed.
In 1959, area code 707 was introduced through the first split of 916. The change reduced 916’s geographic footprint as Northern California’s telephone numbering areas were reorganized.
On November 1, 1997, area code 530 was created from splitting off area code 916 to cover a vast part of inland and northeast of Northern California. This split left area code 916 covering the Sacramento metro area and other cities.
Due to an increasing demand for phone numbers, California Public Utilities Commission introduced area code 279 as an overlay code in 2017. Effective from March 10, 2018, it now serves in tandem with 916, providing telephone service in greater Sacramento, including parts of El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento, Solano, Sutter, and Yolo counties in the Pacific Time Zone.
