Area Code 283 History and Coverage

Area code 283 became available in 2023 as an overlay in the existing area of the 513 numbering plan territory in southwestern Ohio. Overlay means that new numbers were allocated without splitting off a geographic area from the existing numbering plan territory into a separate code. This event was just another step in the long chain of changes that occurred in Ohio's telephone numbering. Originally, area code 513 was one of the North American Numbering Plan codes established in 1947 and covering a much larger region of south-western Ohio. In 1996, there occurred a geographic split resulting in creation of 937, used for Dayton and its neighbors, and reduction of the 513 territory.

Area code 283 and 513 cover the region represented by south-western corner of Ohio and border regions of the Ohio River. These codes include the older urbanized strip of land running up from the river to Hamilton, Middletown, and the I-75 corridor, as well as additional regions of Butler, Clermont, and Warren counties. The codes used in northern Kentucky and southeastern Indiana are different, hence, area code 283 represents only Ohio's side despite the economic connections across the river. This code represents the region in its post-1996 configuration, not the wide territory initially covered by 513.
