Area Code 513 History and Coverage
Area code 513 was assigned in 1947 when it was among the first group of North American Numbering Plan area codes assigned covering a large portion of southwestern Ohio. Originally, the area served an area stretching up to Dayton and some parts of the communities that formed part of the Miami Valley manufacturing and transportation system. The territory of this area showed how important the region was as one of the well-established population and business centers in the post-war numbering plan.
Increased demand for telephone numbers resulted in a split by geography in 1996. The newly created 937 area code received Dayton and much of west-central Ohio, leaving 513 the southern part of the previous territory. As a result, the 513 area code became more focused on the region of the Great Miami River and Ohio River, where the development of the region remained connected with the metropolitan area of south-western Ohio.
Further increase in the number of needed phone numbers continued despite the reduction of the territory. In 2023, the overlay 283 area code was implemented for the region rather than dividing the region geographically. The 513/283 numbering plan consists of Hamilton, Butler, Clermont, and the southern part of Warren counties of Ohio.
