Area Code 315 History and Coverage

Allocated in 1947, it was one of the area codes which was introduced at the very beginning of the North American Numbering Plan. The territory of this area code used to stretch further to the south. In 1954, due to the geographical split, the area code 607 was established and the southern part of this region was separated from 315 area code. Thus, it is mainly represented by the middle and northern parts of the state, including the territory of Mohawk Valley, basin of Oneida Lake and Lake Ontario plain, forming the different geographical corridors.

In addition to that, it also includes settlements within the Adirondack foothills and along the St. Lawrence River, as well as inland counties located between the Finger Lakes region and Canada. All these areas were developed based on waterways, railroads, manufacturing facilities, agricultural zones, and military establishments creating a fragmented territorial structure of development in contrast to a single metropolitan region. In 2017, 680 overlay was introduced for the same area along with 315. The joint numbering plan encompasses both riverine cities within Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties as well as upland parts of Lewis County.
