Area Code 680 History and Coverage
Area code 680 was activated in 2017 as an overlay area code for the well-established 315 number plan in central and northern New York. The 315 code was one of the initial codes established under North American Numbering Plan in 1947 and covering an extensive territory built up on industrial centers, military bases, universities, and lake ports. With the growth in the demand for telephone numbers, the 680 code was introduced for the same geographical territory without any division of the existing area into new zones.
Geographically, the 315/680 numbering zone covers northern direction to Watertown and Thousand Island region, runs along the eastern shore of Lake Ontario from Oswego and reaches southeastern direction to Rome and Utica. The zone covers some towns in the Mohawk Valley, historically developed as a transit zone due to Erie Canal and railroads development in this region. The zone covers some towns around Fort Drum in Watertown, which has always been one of the major military bases in North Country. Geographically, the south boundary of the numbering zone includes the central New York lakeside towns near Auburn and Cortland.
