Area Code 318 History and Coverage

318 area code was allocated in 1957 as a result of geographical split of Louisiana’s original 504 territory. At that point in time, the original North American Numbering Plan code of the state had been 504, so this split provided for a separate number code for the significant part of the state. The 318 area at that moment covered the territory which exceeded the currently recognized boundaries.

337 area code became an offspring of 318 geographical split in 1999. While the former received the territory in southwestern Louisiana, including such areas as Lafayette and Lake Charles, the latter got a territory which became more northern than before. Thus, the area code became separated by the geographical split of the territory rather than an overlay which would cover some of the territory of the previous code.

Another change of the numbering system happened in 2023 when the overlay of 318 code with 457 appeared. Contrary to the geographical split, this overlay means adding of the code to the already existing territory rather than creating new territory and covering it with the new number code. The overlay concerns the territory kept after splitting into 337.
