Area Code 337 History and Coverage
In 1999, area code 337 was introduced as a result of a geographic split from Louisiana’s 318 area code. The southern and southwestern parts of the previous 318 area were isolated by the change while 318 continued serving most of northern Louisiana. It came at a time when high demands for telephones prompted some US states to split their long existing numbering areas.
The code serves an area with the physical features of Gulf Coast plain, prairie farming lands, bayous, and the transport connections which link western Louisiana to the rest of the state. Some of the parishes found in this area include Calcasieu, Acadia, Iberia, St. Landry, St. Martin, and Vermilion. Interstate 10 is one of the east-west transport links found in this area connecting places west of Texas line to the Atchafalaya Basin.
This area code was introduced after the 318 area code was created from 504 in 1957 to cover a bigger area of Louisiana. The introduction of this area code limited the geographical coverage of 318 code while giving the southwestern part of Louisiana its own area code number.
