Area Code 320 History and Coverage

Area code 320 was allocated in 1996 through a geographic division of the 612 area code of Minnesota. Minnesota entered into the North American number system using the 612 area code for the entire state, then the 218 area code was carved out of the north of the state while the 507 area code was created in the southern part of the state. In 1996, the central area of the 612 area code was divided while the 612 area code continued to serve the metropolitan region.

The region was formed in response to the development of several farm-to-market towns, county seat towns, lake resort towns, and some manufacturing towns. Settlement along rail lines, highways, and agricultural trade routes helped develop several centers instead of an urban center. This is evident in the wide geographical coverage and mixed nature of the area code's economy.

It stretches from regions that were affected by the outer Twin Cities to the west central prairie and the Minnesota River Valley. Some regions covered by the 320 area code cover the glacial lakes region of Minnesota where tourism and seasonal homes contribute to the local economy. This makes it different from the northern region of 218 and the southern Minnesota region of 507.
