Area Code 612 History and Coverage
Area code 612 was originally allotted in 1947, which was one of the two North American Numbering Plan codes allotted to the state of Minnesota. 612 was assigned the geographical coverage in the southeastern portion of the state whereas 218 was assigned the remainder of the state. In 1954, there was a realignment of the entire state, and 507 was allotted to southern Minnesota, making 507 as the third area code of the state of Minnesota.
Subsequent geographic splits steadily reduced the 612 footprint. The 1996 creation of 320 moved much of central Minnesota outside the metropolitan region into a separate code. Two years later, 651 was created for St. Paul, its eastern suburbs, and the Mississippi River corridor toward Wabasha. That division separated the eastern side of the metro from the remaining 612 territory.
The final major change came in 2000, when a three-way geographic split produced 763 for northwestern suburbs and 952 for southwestern suburbs. The plan used municipal boundaries where possible, rather than adding an overlay to the same territory. Those divisions placed 763 along the northwestern suburban side, 952 to the southwest, and 651 across much of the eastern Twin Cities.
